Description
This is a pencil sketch that shows the three original domes in San Jose, California Circa 1967. Of the dome cluster, the left one was built and opened in 1964 and the other two were added in 1968. All three were demolished in spite of opposition by preservationists. I don’t think any single dome still exists but a few of the original dome clusters still stand but most are vacant or re-purposed (usually into churches). This is the only drawing I have seen showing the three domes, the flagship to the entire chain.
Roughly 50 years ago, a new culture started to emerge. Interstate highways rolled out and the valley’s architecture began to reflect that freedom and optimism for the future. Space-age symbols appeared on businesses designed to attract people driving cars with rocket tail fins. Wing-shaped roofs and starburst-laden signs became common themes.
You can scroll through this article by The Verge to get an idea of what these dome theaters were all about and how they became a part of so many people’s lives. The shots of the teardown are pretty cool as well.
